Additional Info: Another Montreal firefighter suffered second-degree burns when he tried to rescue Marleau.

Incident Details

Cause of Death: Marleau, who is the fourth Montreal firefighter to die in the line of duty since 1990, died from injuries he suffered when an apparent flashup occurred when he was separated from other firefighters.

MONTREAL — A civic funeral service for firefighter Capt. Marcel Marleau will be held Thursday if an autopsy scheduled for this morning goes ahead as planned, a senior fire official confirmed last night.

Marleau, a 28-year veteran of the department, died early Saturday as he led a team investigating complaints of smoke in an apartment building in Montreal North.

Members of the fire department contacted Marleau's family yesterday to discuss funeral arrangements, James Ross, fire department chief of operations, said last night.
