Devoted Spring Valley, N.Y., firefighter dies

By CATHERINE L. FOLEY
The Journal News (New York)

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. — John "Bobby" Westervelt, a longtime member of the Spring Valley Fire Department, died unexpectedly at the firehouse Sunday. He was 57.

Westervelt, who joined the department in 1974, went to the Spring Valley Hook & Ladder Company firehouse for a fire call about 2 p.m., Chief Scott Maia said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Esther Dashew senior-citizens complex at 20 Secora Road for what turned out to be a false alarm. Westervelt and others at the firehouse who were preparing to respond were told to stay, Maia said.
