By FireRescue1 Staff

KANKAKEE TOWNSHIP, Ill. — An Ill. fire chief died Thursday after he failed to recover from a heart attack.

Matthew Hubly, 43, Chief of the Kankakee Township Fire Department, shoveled snow at his station Friday before attending a department-related meeting. At the meeting, Chief Hubly began sweating and feeling warm. He became unresponsive en route to a hospital.

Hubly spent several days in the hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest twice and developed a blood clot in his heart. He passed away Thursday.

Chief Hubly's hospitalization brought an outpouring of support from his community and the larger fire service.
