Fire truck rolls into UK firefighter at accident scene

The Western Mail

CWMBRAN, Wales — A firefighter was seriously injured after a fire appliance rolled onto him at the scene of a road accident.

Five people were reported to be trapped when a car overturned outside the Castell-y-bwch Inn, in Henllys, near Cwmbran, at 3.45am on Saturday. All five had safely got out of the vehicle when fire crews from Cwmbran and Malpas arrived.

As the firefighters were checking no-one else was trapped, one of the appliances accidentally rolled, coming to rest against an embankment.

A firefighter suffered serious leg and shoulder injuries and was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.

Gwent Police, the Vehicle Operators Standards Agency (VOSA) and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have launched a joint investigation.

A statement from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it "would like to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in assisting at this incident".
