Officals warn of CO dangers at Ind. NASCAR race

INDIANAPOLIS — Health authorities are warning recreational vehicle drivers about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning as race fans arrive for this weekend's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard NASCAR race.

The Marion County Health Department has produced posters and fliers that will be handed out at RV parking areas around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

During the Indianapolis 500 in May, 43-year-old Michael Thies (TEES) of Ruma, Ill., died and three family members were hospitalized when carbon monoxide fumes entered their RV.

Investigators believe a vent may have pulled in fumes from a nearby vehicle. Speedway police say there was no evidence of any criminal wrongdoing.
