By Karen Honikel
Capital News 9

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield fire and police continue to investigate what happened on Dalton Avenue in Pittsfield. That's where Pasquale Perry and his sister, Mary LeClair, were found unconscious from carbon monoxide poisoning. According to fire officials, a high efficiency home-heating unit may have caused erosion in the chimney, creating a deadly blockage.

Fire inspector Joe Carchedi said, "We seem to think that these chimneys are deteriorating faster because of the new more efficient boilers creating more moisture and acid causing the walls of the chimney to disintegrate basically."

The home's oil burning-unit was cleaned and inspected just this past October. Currently oil burning technicians are only required to check the entrance to the chimney but not higher up in the structure. That's where they said the erosion most likely occurred.
