Job Description
|
| This is the first level in the fire and life safety series. This class is responsible for firefighting and emergency response. Enters incident reports and updates daily log; keeps equipment prepared for emergency response. Performs firefighting duties; performs as basic emergency medical technician in emergency response situations. Participates in required training classes with and for firefighters, also participates in classes to obtain degree. Participates in physical fitness program. Provides community service, assists citizens with questions and fire protection issues, public education. Serves as a member of employee team to support department operations. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Both Firefighter I and II are included in this classification. As experience and training increase the level of responsibility and accountability within each essential duty increases. Firefighter II has the ability and training to drive the fire truck, to safely transport personnel to and from locations, including emergency response. Each level of Firefighter has an increasing amount of experience and training required prior to promotion (if a position is available). An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Firefighter I – There is no time minimum time as Firefighter Recruit for promotion. Personnel need to complete 3 semester hours towards an Associate’s degree in Fire Protection. Effective July 31, 2006, 6 semester hours towards an Associate’s degree in Fire Protection will be required. Firefighter II – 22 months of experience as Firefighter I, 8 credit hours towards Associate’s degree in Fire Protection. Effective July 31, 2006, 18 semester hours towards an Associate’s degree in Fire Protection will be required. Licensing Requirements: Firefighter I: Valid North Carolina Driver’s License; North Carolina Certified Firefighter I; North Carolina Certified Emergency Medical Technician; North Carolina Haz-mat Awareness Level Certification; National Incident Management System Certification; North Carolina Haz-mat Operations Level Certification. Firefighter II: North Carolina Certified Firefighter I & II; North Carolina Certified Emergency Medical Technician; North Carolina Haz-mat Awareness Level Certification; North Carolina Certified Hazardous Materials Operations or Technician; North Carolina Certified Emergency Vehicle Driver; North Carolina Certified Driver Operator Pumps (Effective April 1, 2007); North Carolina Certified Driver Operator Aerials (Effective April 1, 2007); National Incident Management System Certification; Valid North Carolina Driver’s License Class B. Knowledge of: Fire safety and education; Geography of city; Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; Firefighter I & II standards. Skill in: Mechanical repairs; Using computers and applicable software applications; Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Job Requirements

| Age 18Education H.S. Grad. or GEDExperience Must complete Firefigher II, Haz-mat Ops & Rescue Technician certification at 80% passing grade upon completion of Basic Recruit Training Program.
