Maine firefighters ski to help fight breast cancer

Mary and Wayne Allen founded the event to help in the fight; Wayne was a volunteer firefighter and his wife Mary died from breast cancer in 2005

BRIDGTON, Maine —Teams of firefighters from across Maine and New England donned full turnout gear and took to the slopes of Shawnee Peak Saturday to help raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

Each team of five firefighters held 50 feet of fire hose as they raced down a giant slalom course for the 11th annual Mary's Firemen for a Cure race. Henry Hudson's Harrison Fire Department notched the fastest time at Saturday's race, but he says it's all in good fun.

"We all get together, everyone raises some money and we have a good time," says Hudson. "When everybody gets called to a fire call it's not good circumstances. There's a car accident or a house on fire but in this case everyone is getting together for a good cause."
