Hazmat called in for Chicago 5-vehicle crash

The Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO — One person was hospitalized and several lanes of the Kennedy Expressway were shut down for nearly an hour Tuesday in a crash involving five vehicles, including two semi-trailer trucks and a snowplow.

The crash occurred shortly before noon on eastbound Interstate Highway 90/94 near Ogden Avenue, Illinois State Police said. One of the trucks jackknifed into the other, rupturing a saddle tank and spilling diesel over the road.

The Chicago Fire Department called for a hazardous materials response team and cleaned up about 50 gallons of fuel. All lanes were shut down until the spill could be contained.

One person was taken to the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, state police said.
