Rescuers respond to N.Y.four car pile-up

An accident in North Babylon on Thursday left three people hospitalized with serious injuries, and one of the injured was arrested for driving while intoxicated, the Suffolk police said.

The multi-car accident started at 6:41 p.m. when a vehicle driven by Shaun Boyd, 30, rear-ended a pickup truck on Prairie Drive just west of Deer Park Avenue, the police said.

Boyd was driving without a license and had 21 suspensions against his license, the police said.

Boyd, of 111 Brooklyn Ave., North Babylon, was charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation. He was issued a field appearance ticket, and further charges are expected, pending the results of a blood-alcohol lab test, the police said.

Boyd's 2001 Volkswagen was headed westbound on Prairie Drive, when it struck the rear of a 1992 Chevy pickup truck driven by Isitan Hayrettin, 45, of 469 S. Delaware Ave., Lindenhurst, the police said.

Boyd's car then collided head-on with a 2006 Hyundai driven eastbound by Janet Bermudez, 59, of 128 Governor Ave., West Babylon, the police said.

Meanwhile, Hayrettin's pick up overturned, slid on its roof and collided with a parked car.

The police said Boyd was airlifted to the University Medical Center at Stony Brook with a broken back and lung damage; Bermudez was taken by North Babylon Ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip with a broken left ankle and left wrist, loose teeth and mouth lacerations; and Hayrettin was taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital, suffering a cut to the back of his head and cement dust in his eyes from cement bags stored in his truck.

All vehicles, other than the parked car, were impounded for safety checks. First Squad detectives are investigating.
