LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — A school bus carrying a high school soccer team slammed into a sports utility vehicle in southern Wisconsin on Friday evening, leaving two Chicago area residents dead and nine students injured.

The bus, carrying 26 faculty and students from Lake Geneva Badger High School, broadsided a Chevrolet Blazer on Highway 120 around 6:30 p.m., said Walworth County Sheriff David Graves.

The Blazer failed to stop at a stop sign at Highway 120, Graves said. The bus hit the Blazer and the Blazer then hit a tree head about 500 feet away, he said.

"It was a pretty devastating impact with the tree," Graves said. The bus ended up on its side, he said.

Nine students were taken to two hospitals with minor injuries and Graves said most had been released by late Friday. The rest of the students were released to their parents at the scene, he said.

The Blazer's male driver died on the scene and the female passenger died about two hours later at a hospital, he said.

Graves declined to release information on the pair, except to say that they were from the Chicago area.
