Early morning auto accident injures 8 and closes major Fla. interstate

Department: Orlando Fire Department - [Orlando, Florida]

Wednesday morning at approximately 0300 HRS, Orlando Fire Department units where dispatched to a A/A with extrication, E 1, R 1, T 1, Heavy Rescue 1 and District 1 responded. Upon E1's arrival, Lt. Rod Williams advised three vehicles and multiple patients and requested a 1st alarm medical. E 101, R 2 Division 1 responded as well as the Air Light truck and HazMat 1. R 11 and R3 were also dispatched due to the additional needs for more transport units.

Tower 1 and Heavy Rescue 1 split their response and each took a different vehicle to perform extrication and remove the entrapped victims.

Units were able to determine that there were a total of 8 adults who required treatment and transport; 4 of these were trauma alerts and were sent to the local trauma center.

Police investigation determined that a minivan with 6 people entered the interstae going in the wrong direction and struck a single vehicle. While the occupants were exiting the vehicles, another vehicle unaware of the accident ran into the victims both inside and outside the vehicles.

The major interstate running through downtown Orlando was closed for approximately 3 hours and was reopened by police at the beginning of rush hour.
