SC firefighter injured at residential fire

Asst. Fire Chief: Home was 50 percent involved when firefighters arrived

SALEM, S.C. — A home inside the Cliffs at Keowee Falls development near Salem burned early Thursday, despite efforts of fire departments from both Oconee and Pickens counties.

The two-story home in Driftwood Court at Jasmine Point was already heavily involved in fire when firefighters answered the call shortly after 12:15 a.m. Thursday.

The Keowee Fire Department was second on the scene, according to Assistant Chief Brandon Shirley and the home was about 50 percent involved in fire at that time.

The home, which has an estimated size of 7,000 square feet, was unoccupied at the time, as the owner is in Florida at this time, according to a neighbor.

One firefighter was transported from the scene requiring medical attention.

The fire was contained, according to firefighters at the scene, and significant spreading to the surrounding woodlands was prevented.

A boat from the Pickens County fire department assisted by spraying water on flames from offshore. No cause or cost of the fire was immediately available.
