SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Four fire departments were needed to extinguish an apartment fire early Saturday morning in Speedway, according to Indianapolis Fire Department officials.

Firefighters responded to a call around 2:15 a.m. at International Village Apartments in the 6300 block of Hollister Drive. Sixteen units from IFD, Speedway, Wayne Township and Pike Township were dispatched in all and needed 90 minutes to put out the two-alarm fire, IFD spokesman Lieutenant Larry Tracy said.

Fire and heavy smoke were showing when firefighters arrived on the scene, Tracy said. As firefighters aggressively attacked the scene, the second-floor stairs collapsed. Speedway Fire Department's Ladder 201 crew was forced to call for a "mayday" with no way out of the apartment building and a critically low air supply.
