Firefighters contain factory fire

MELBOURNE, Australia — Firefighters have averted a major blaze in inner Melbourne that broke out in a factory around 10:30 p.m. (AEDT) last night.

The flames were being fed by a gas furnace and there was 10,000 litres of oil nearby.

Firefighters managed to put out the Richmond blaze before it reached the oil.

Meanwhile, firefighters discovered a cannabis crop while battling a blaze at a two-storey house in Roxburgh Park, in Melbourne's north, last night.

The Country Fire Authority's Stewart Marshall said it was a dangerous situation for his crews.

"When the first crews went through the door they encountered some unidentified chemicals in drums, which was of concern to us," he said.

"The power was turned off and we discovered there was still power to the building, so we suspected there was a secondary source to the building."

Elsewhere, fire crews had to revived a pet dog they rescued from a fire at Mooroopna, in Shepparton.

A number of pets were pulled from the blaze but another dog died.

An unoccupied home was destroyed in nearby McKean Street a short time later and a neighbouring home was also damaged.
