While attacking the blaze, crews realized Firefighter David Powell, 56, was on the ground unconscious, according to the WKRN.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while Captain James Trollinger, 61, was also hospitalized for minor burns to his cheek and neck.
A Nashville Fire Department spokesperson said Firefighter Powell was leaving the burning house to replace his air tank, but fell down a flight of steps into the basement, leaving him without air.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire, but say it started on the first floor office area of the home.
