KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A woman and a child died early Saturday morning after fire broke out at an apartment complex in the Legends Oaks Apartments in Kansas City, Kan.

The fire started at about 5:45 a.m. and when firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire was raging from the apartment located at 1800 North 76th Drive.

Crews found a woman and a five-year-old girl there, and both died from their injuries.

Authorities say the woman was not the girl’s mother, but was caring for her in one of the apartments.

Firefighters do not yet know what caused the fire.

The Red Cross is helping other families affected by the fire, providing food, clothing and shelter as needed.
