Chicago-area firefighter on leave after attacking, injuring woman

CHICAGO — A woman, allegedly attacked by a Chicago firefighter, ran to his apartment for help because she did not recognize the assailant, prosecutors said at a hearing.

"She knew he was a firefighter and she thought he would be able to help her," Assistant State's Attorney Amari Dawson said during a hearing Tuesday for Gary Swiercz, 49, a Chicago Ridge fire official.
