Video: Snow stunt leads to firefighter investigation

A YouTube video showing kids jumping from a roof may have been shot from a firehouse

By Ilana Gold
NBC Connecticut

HARTFORD, Conn. — A Hartford fire station is under investigation because of a video posted on YouTube.

The video shows kids jumping off a roof into a snow bank after the blizzard and the fire chief wants to know if his firefighters took the video and why they did nothing to stop it.

The YouTube video was taken from a second-story window at Park and Affleck in Hartford after the weekend blizzard and a group behind the camera cheers on the kids as they jumped from the roof of the city library into deep snowbanks that cover the sidewalks. They even commented on possible injuries.

Josh Miskin Josh Miskin Thursday, February 14, 2013 11:23:53 PM They are supposed to protect people from fires not stupidity, and so what if they took the video. Let kids be kids and stop being so safety conscious of everything.
John Lang John Lang Friday, February 15, 2013 3:25:45 PM I can hear it now. "Firefighter"....Hey you kids don't jump off there you might get hurt. "kids".....Hey go fu#$ yourself your not my father. Yup that worked.
Jonny Mac Jonny Mac Friday, February 15, 2013 3:29:07 PM So we are supposed to be cops now? Last time I checked, we don't prevent stupidity. I remember being told "let the cops do their jobs, you do yours."
Luis R. Ybarra Luis R. Ybarra Friday, February 15, 2013 5:24:49 PM like i once heard grandpa lived to be 100 years old doing one thing. minding his own business. where are their parents.
Jon Whiskey Jon Whiskey Friday, February 15, 2013 7:47:31 PM You people HAVE to be joking! This is EXACTLY where the social decay in this country is driven from! Where is the accountability? Why is it that no one in this country can be held accountable for their own actions? How the HELL is it a Firefighter's fault that some kids are jumping off of roofs onto snow? I'll tell you what I would have told ANYONE including a cop when I was a kid if they told me not to do something (especially that isn't illegal)..."Kick rocks asshole, mind your own business". And these firefighters are what? Not allowed to be entertained by stupid people? This Chief is out of line, this city is out of line, and Ermino Sanchez has just proved exactly how much of a moron he is on national television.
Bill Hoeft Bill Hoeft Friday, February 15, 2013 8:02:13 PM The news media loves blaming those that have no part in the incident. If the kids get hurt, o' well. I guess I forgot we are now little robots that can do nothing that has even a remote possiblity of a minor injury. The news people are also pretty good at picking idiots to interview.
Saturday, February 16, 2013 11:18:13 AM First of all if it were the firefighters video taping this ( no one knows yet or isn't saying it was or wasn't) why isn't anyone pissed at the stupidity of filming it, and 2nd why is anyone pissed off that they put it on YouTube. Hasn't anyone ever heard of lawyers suing the City and Dept for allowing this to happen. Guess I am in the minority of those commenting. If my guys had taped it they would have gotten an ear full. I don't really have a problem with the FFTRS doing nothing about but don't get caught and video tape can and has gotten people caught. I know I am speaking out of both sides of my mouth. But having retired out as a Chief Officer I learned how to look at both sides of the coin from an exective standpoint and a FFTR standpoint. Having said all that when I was kid although not jumping into a snow bank (not a lot of snow growing up next to Disneyland in SoCal) we did things that today would be considered way to dangerous. We need to let kids be kids and do stunts or dangerous things instead of bubble wrapping them.
Hal Clough Hal Clough Sunday, February 17, 2013 10:57:51 AM Why would the fire fighters be responsable for the actions of these kids. It may not of been such a good idea posting it on youtube. The parents are responsable for the actions of their kids not a city employee. If the mayor is so upset he should file a complaint with the police and have them charged with tresspassing or something. Otherwise it leave it to kids being kids. Like he didn't do similar things when he was a teenager. How did the kids get on the roof of the library anyway?
Cris Dahlgren Cris Dahlgren Sunday, February 17, 2013 11:56:23 AM Been there done that!!
Kurtis Cook Kurtis Cook Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:09:37 PM They should have atleast called law enforcement to put a stop to it. I they did do something the people would complain that firefighters are not law enforcement and if they don't do anything than people want to know why. Catch 22
Cindy Howarth Cindy Howarth Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:14:14 PM All I can say is how stupid to place the blame on the firefighters! Accountability people, accountability! Where were the parents? If the firefighters are being held accountable, what about the police for NOT seeing this and stopping it? Why doesn't Child Protection Services come under ridicule for not giving these kids safer homes? Maybe the state for failing to give them a proper education? I agree that posting this on you tube wasn't the best idea, but I am sure at the time it was just to show how much snow they had received and not how the kids were preforming some deadly act! This is exactly why our world is falling apart, people don't know enough to take care of the important things that are happening all around them!
Al Davis Al Davis Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:22:15 PM IT'S NOT THE FIREFIGHTER'S JOB TO PARENT THESE KIDS! They are not responsible for everyone else. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS OF THESE KIDS WHILE THEY ARE DOING THIS? Exactly! NOT THERE! The citizen interviewed in this needs to have a reality check and listen to what he's saying. I can't believe anyone would point fingers at anyone else for videoing this. That's what's wrong with this country. Always pointing the blame to someone else. RIDICULOUS!
Fenris Wolf Fenris Wolf Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:28:14 PM Oh man! Who will be the first to throw a stone on the FF's? May be hurt here, caused injuries there... I know, you all got birth adult, and none did something dangerous as a child! Those FF's shared the fun with the kids, and I'm sure, they would have helped them, if they got injured!
Catherine Campbell Catherine Campbell Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:28:54 PM Fire fighter......not babysitter where were the parents, oh that's right you can't discipline so you just ignore them.
Mark Ledet Mark Ledet Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:35:48 PM See now my problem is why are the kids able to get on the roof of a library...
Mike Whilden Mike Whilden Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:38:17 PM You are absolutely right. I have personally caught the wrath of not only kids but parents too in very similar situation involving a hotel pool in Orlando.
Daniel Thompson Daniel Thompson Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:49:18 PM How about we blame the driver of the car that drove by; or the two pedestrians in the video? Let's get real people. We've all done stupid things as kids. Move onto more important topics in your little po-dunk town. Like more police to prevent this. I bet our brothers aren't getting enough in their paychecks to double up as police.
Fredric L. Rice Fredric L. Rice Sunday, February 17, 2013 5:57:20 PM Wuh? What is wrong with this? When I was a kid I used to jump from roofs on to grass and concrete, never got injured, never even considered the possibility of injury. What? you want to wrap kids in bubble-wrap? Make sure the precious children never take chances, obey the Christofascist State, never learn and experience real life for themselves? Jebuss help us if such coddled, pansy children ever had a real national emergency, a disaster or a war where they actually had to either survive on their own or defend the country. Looking at people even thinking there's something wrong here means people need to adult the fuck up. The world isn't packed in cotton, playing "save the children!" is why we get kids growing in to adults who scream if they're chased by moths at night.
David Rice David Rice Sunday, February 17, 2013 6:24:35 PM Oh good grief. It is not the job of fire fighters to parent other adult's children: it's the job of the children's parents! How the bloody hell is this not obvious to Fire Chief Casares that it's none of his damned business? GO PUNISH THE PARENTS FOR FAILING TO PARENT THEIR CHILDREN! "Investigating" people because they failed to parent someone else's children is insane!
David Rice David Rice Sunday, February 17, 2013 6:28:07 PM Yeah, I do not "get it" either. If the "young men" are injured, it's the fault of their parents and it is their parents who are responsible for their children's medical care, their children's safety, and their children's behavior. It is insane to insist that non-parents stop what they are doing and go parent other people's children.
Fredric L. Rice Fredric L. Rice Sunday, February 17, 2013 6:41:25 PM That isn't even the bigger issue here. The issue is that the kids aren't doing anything wrong or illegal or potentially harmful. Why should anyone think the kids are in harm's way and even need protecting? They don't. Used to be American kids would grow up or not, parents would see to their development and then admit to themselves that it's up to the kid to make choices. Some how thanks to Christofascism we're a nation of buttinskis who think they have the right to decide behaviors are dangerous and feel they have the right to dictate to others.
Jeff East Jeff East Monday, February 18, 2013 6:12:53 AM Hey Chief, grow some balls and stand up to whomever is complaining. Tell them it is not your policy to intervene in children's activities. It was pure & simple fun, I used to do that with my own children. Ya just can't fix stupid.
