CRETE, Ind. — A retired Steger firefighter who was struck by a car in a hit and run accident in Crete late Sunday night was pronounced dead from his injuries early Monday.
Police are investigating the incident as a reckless homicide case. Leonard Bottando, 70, of the 3600 block of Chicago Road was pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m. Monday at Franciscan St. James Health hospital in Chicago Heights, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Bottando was struck by a vehicle while walking at 8:17 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of Main Street in Crete, the spokeswoman said.
