NEWARK, Ohio — An elderly driver was killed yesterday when his car pulled out of a gas station into the path of an ambulance.

Richard F. Little, 93, of Granville, died in the 10:23 a.m. crash on Mount Vernon Road near North Vernon Avenue, Newark police said.

The four occupants of the ambulance were injured, and one was flown to Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.

The Critical Life ambulance, driven by Steven W. Burgett, 54, of Gambier, was taking a patient in non-emergency mode, using neither sirens nor flashing lights, when the crash occurred, authorities said.

One of the health-care workers in the ambulance, Bobbie L. Hendricks, 42, of Mount Vernon, suffered a head injury and was flown to the OSU hospital, police said.

Burgett, another ambulance worker and the patient in the ambulance were treated at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark for injuries that were not life-threatening.
