First responders maneuvered a ladder into the 'inner workings' of the bridge the man fell into

CHICAGO — A man doing maintenance work on the Washington Street bridge fell 30 feet into the structure's gear mechanisms after he slipped on a catwalk early Thursday.

The man fell twice — down two levels — into an area that contained the "inner workings" of the bridge, according to Central District Police Sgt. Craig Roberts.

Firefighters rescued the man by maneuvering a ladder into a pit, Fire Chief Kevin MacGregor said. The man had a broken wrist and possibly a fractured shoulder. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
