Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue is currently building a pool of qualified candidates for the position of Part-Time Firefighter. Qualified candidates will remain in the pool for a period of 24-months.
The department requires the candidate PHQ. You can access the questionnaire through your candidate account.
The PHQ must be completed by the closing date or you may not be considered further in the process.

To be included for this recruitment process, testing must be completed by June 23, 2014.

Classification: Part-Time Firefighter/EMT-B

Temporary Part-Time Firefighters work no more than 150.5 hours per month (average of 35 hours). The work schedule for Part-Time Firefighters is a 24-hour shift every 9th day and at least two additional 12-hour day shifts per month. Part-Time Firefighters augment full-time, career staffing providing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services including, but not limited to: Fire control and extinguishment, driving and operating firefighting apparatus and emergency vehicles, rescue, medical treatment, training, station and equipment maintenance duties. In addition, Part-Time Firefighters perform project work related to their primary responsibilities under the direction of a Full-Time Career Firefighter or Fire Officer.

Salary Information:

  • PF1: $10.56/hr
  • PF2: $11.28/hr
  • PF3: $12.00/hr

    • Work or volunteer experience as a firefighter, EMT and apparatus operator
    • Driving and operating commercial vehicles of similar size to fire apparatus
    • Experience in a service oriented occupation

    Baccalaureate Degree; Foreign language proficiency (Spanish preferred)

    Hiring Process:

    Selection Process:
    Based on an application review and written exam score, candidates may be invited to participate in a Panel Interview. Panel Interviews will be conducted on either July 14 or 15, 2014. Applicants with a combined score of 70% on the Weighted Application, Written Examination, and Oral Board and who have current NTN CPAT Certification (i.e., passed within the last 12 months) will be selected for the pool of qualified applicants. The pool will be stratified into four groups (quartiles) based on their scores in the initial elements of the selection process. The number of individuals selected to continue in the process from the pool of qualified applicants at any given time will be based on the District’s staffing requirements. The District may select any individual from the qualified pool to continue in the assessment process.

    Candidates in the qualified pool who are selected to advance in the hiring process will be invited to participate in a skills assessment. This element of the assessment process evaluates proficiency in a range of firefighting and emergency medical skills:
    • Fire skills may include inspection, donning and use of breathing apparatus, hoseline deployment, and ladder raises.
    • EMT skills may include patient and family interaction, trauma or medical patient assessment, airway management, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
    • Interpersonal skills will be assessed within the context of the fire and EMT skills assessment.


    Skills Assessment for Part-Time Firefighter on date TBD. Candidates who are successful may be invited to an Executive Interview on date TBD.
