The Running Springs Fire Department is part of the Running Springs Water District (District) which is an Independent Special District governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors. The Running Springs Fire Department is financed through a combination of property and voter-approved special taxes. The Running Springs Fire Department employs 6 full-time line personnel assigned to a 48/96 hour shift (all licensed paramedics), a Battalion Chief and Fire Chief assigned to 4/10 hour shifts and one full-time administrative assistant. In addition to its full-time staff, the Department maintains a roster of paid call firefighters who support the full time staff response. The Department provides all-risk emergency services from two fire stations, which house one squad, two type 1 engines, one type 3 engine and three Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances staffed 24 hours per day 7 days per week. The District is the provider of ambulance services within its exclusive operating area and is committed to serving our communities with the finest fire, rescue and emergency medical services possible.
The Running Springs Fire Department is seeking a highly energetic, strongly motivated individual for the position of Battalion Chief who possesses a unique combination of knowledge, experience, skills and abilities suited for the District’s unique operational needs. This is an exempt, at-will position.
The primary role of the Battalion Chief is to administer, plan, organize and supervise the delivery of fire and emergency medical services within the District. The Battalion Chief reports directly to the Fire Chief. It is crucial that the Battalion Chief have experience, knowledge and expertise in a wide variety of operational disciplines including ALS ambulance transport programs. She or he must be committed to cultivating and maintaining a positive public image by meeting with citizen groups, promoting good public relations and understand the importance of providing value added services.
As a condition of employment, the Battalion Chief must be a full-time resident living within the District. The successful candidate will have six months to fulfill this conditional requirement. Under policies and guidelines established by the Fire Chief, the Battalion Chief has full supervisorial and senior command authority over all Running Springs Fire Department personnel, equipment, resources, facilities, fire prevention/fire protection planning/public education programs, operations, training, etc., and the adopted budget which appropriates funds for the fiscal year.
The monthly salary range is $7,722 - $9,855 negotiable within range based upon experience and skills.
Classic CalPERS members have a retirement formula of Safety 3% at 50. All Classic Safety Members hired on or after April 1, 2014 pay the nine percent (9%) normal member contributions. New CalPERS members have a retirement formula of Safety 2.7% at 57 with a three year final compensation period. The new member contribution rate as a percentage of payroll is 11.50% of reportable compensation.
