Texas firefighters help recover stolen SWAT gear again

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Corpus Christi Fire Department again has aided in the recovery of police gear that was stolen from a SWAT team officer's car.

Keys, radio batteries and 40 rounds of ammunition were in a green bag found Friday alongside the road in the 300 block of Saratoga Boulevard by an off-duty firefighter as he was driving home about 3:15 p.m.

The firefighter told police at first he thought the bag might be a tool bag, a police news release said. But once he opened it, he realized it could belong to the SWAT officer who had his car burglarized the weekend of Feb. 8.

Police confirmed the items as being part of the property stolen from the trunk of the SWAT team member's unmarked city-issued car parked on the city's Southside.

A day before the firefighter's discovery, a semiautomatic rifle, handgun and Taser were found in a commercial trash bin outside a Southside business after a Corpus Christi Fire Department arson investigator received a tip.

Items that remain missing include a helmet, flashlight, radio, gas mask, jacket, backpack, SWAT bag, rain gear, baton, face shield, holster and body armor.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and wouldn't comment.
