TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — A New York firefighter who climbed down into a manhole to try to rescue a worker apparently overcome by fumes died along with the man he tried to save.

Firefighter John Kelly and Department of Public Works employee Anthony Ruggiero died Monday in Tarrytown, a village about 20 miles northwest of Manhattan. They were pulled from the manhole by rescuers and pronounced dead at a hospital.

Village Administrator Michael Blau says Ruggiero was responding to a report of a sewer backup when he entered the manhole Monday.

Firefighter Kelly was called in to help out.

Both men apparently were knocked unconscious by fumes in the sewer.

The manhole was located behind the Tarrytown Main Street firehouse, where both men served at the all-volunteer department, according to CBS2.

The New York State Department of Labor is investigating why the pair entered the manhole without breathing apparatus and whether or not they checked air quality in the confined space.

Oxygen levels in the manhole were dangerously low, according to officials, and the state requires workers to check air quality prior to entering a manhole.

"Our prayers go out to the families of these two men, who were doing their jobs. One of them a firefighter acting heroically trying to save the other one," Tarrytown mayor Drew Fixell told CBS2.
