WINTER PARK, Fla. — The city has won a Community Health and Safety Award from the International City-County Management Association for its ambulance-safety initiative. City representatives will accept the award at the association's annual conference in Richmond, Va., in September.
The Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department spent several months working with manufacturers to design ambulances that would be safer for paramedics.
The new ambulances have harnesses that allow medics to stay seated and secured while treating patients. Previously, medics typically rode unrestrained in the back of the ambulance.
