U.S. Fire Departments Turning to Hale High-GPM Pumps to Knock Down Fires with Greater Efficiency
CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. — According to the National Fire Protection Association, fires accounted for about $17.6 billion in losses during the last decade, despite a decreasing number of fires. For fire companies such as Greenfield Fire District (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), there remains a need to be able to move big water by using high-GPM pumps in order to limit large-loss fires.
“Our fire department covers widespread urban and rural areas, and we need to move a lot of water quickly over long distances,” said Capt. Gary Bullard of Fire Station 4, Greenfield Fire District. “We answer calls for about 200 fires a year, and the high-GPM pumps help us knock them down more efficiently to prevent additional monetary losses.”
Currently, Greenfield Fire District has two 1,500 GPM Qmax pumps and a 2,000 GPM Qmax pump among its fleet of 10 apparatus. The 1,500 GPM Qmax pumps are on Greenfield’s new pumper tanker and single-axle rescue pumper.
Other fire departments taking delivery of apparatus with Qmax high-GPM pumps this year include:
- Carmel Fire Department (Carmel, Ind.)
- South Franklin Township Fire Department (Washington County, Penn.)
- Worchester Fire Department (Worchester, Mass.)
- Shumway Fire Protection District (Effingham, Ill.)
- Moncure Fire Department (Moncure, N.C.)
- Tamarac Fire Rescue (Tamarac, Fla.)
“Nothing protects a community from mayhem like big water,” said Dominic Colletti, chief brand marketing manager at Hale Products and former assistant fire chief. “Fire chiefs and truck committees that are specifying pumpers should give high consideration to maximizing GPM pump size in order to better serve and protect their communities.”
