North Platte firefighters may breathe a little easier with new breathing equipment Grantto be purchased by grant dollars.

The North Platte Fire Department was notified Thursday of a federal grant of $217,674 from the 2005 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The funds will be used to purchase an air-compressor system, an airflow tester and 40 sets of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus gear, which firefighters use to breathe while fighting fires...
