Exit Technology Adds Motion-Sensing Technology to their Tracker FRT

BOULDER, Col. - Exit Technologies has added motion-sensing technology to their Tracker FRT (Firefighter Rescue Transceiver) to further simplify downed firefighter searches with the popular tracking device.

The Tracker FRT is a low-frequency radio transmitter and receiver worn on the SCBA waist belt during firefighting and urban search-and-rescue operations. It is based on similar technology used for rescuing buried avalanche victims. When switched from standby to search mode, it receives the signal of a distressed firefighter. A bright distance display indicates which way the searcher should go to find the victim. A new motion-sensing accelerometer in the Tracker FRT detects when the firefighter is down. After 30 seconds without motion, the unit goes into warning mode. If motion does not resume within 45 seconds, then the Tracker FRT begins sending a silent 457 kHz transmit signal that can be detected through walls, floors, and other obstacles.

In the past, the Tracker FRT entered transmit mode as soon as the firefighter left the apparatus, using an auto-on lanyard similar to those on a stand-alone PASS device. The new Tracker model also turns on automatically this way, but enters standby instead of transmit mode when powered up. It only goes into transmit mode if the firefighter is in distress. This means that in the event of a Mayday, the only signal being transmitted will be that of the victim.

A major advantage of the Tracker FRT system is that the transmitter and receiver are integrated, so they can be used for self-rescue or buddy rescue by members of the same crew. This differs from other tracking technologies, which have separate transmitting and receiving units. These can only be used by a rapid intervention team or other crew that brings the receiver into the structure from outside. The Tracker’s new configuration will continue to include this unique capability. Not only can the Tracker FRT be used by fellow crewmembers to locate each other, but they can be used to locate strategically placed Egress Transmitters at exits and other points of safety—enabling firefighters to re-orient themselves without tying up the fireground with a Mayday.

Exit Tech will show production models at the FRI show in Dallas on Sept. 14-16. Prices are $400 for the Tracker FRT and $250 for Egress Transmitters. For more info, call (303)468-5698 or see www.exit-technologies.com.
