San Francisco backs phone app aiming to save lives

The app alerts volunteer citizens trained in CPR to respond to nearby cardiac emergencies

SAN FRANCISCO — An iPhone app developed by a fire department with the goal of saving lives has secured support from a major city.

San Francisco has pledged to help develop and implement the "Fire Department app," which alerts volunteer citizens trained in CPR to respond to nearby cardiac emergencies, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and Fire Fighters Union Local 798 said Tuesday.

The app is currently only available in the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, a nearby region where the technology was originally developed.

In addition to broadcasting alerts when a cardiac emergency occurs, the app provides locations for nearby AEDs.
