FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Thieves stole the helmet of a fallen firefighter shortly after his funeral last week in Massachusetts, prompting local officials to offer a $1,000 reward for the return of the equipment.

Framingham Firefighter Mike Urban died Jan. 7 after battling the lung cancer mesothelioma, caused by exposure to asbestos.

The helmet was stolen from the car of Firefighter Urban's nephew, along with other valuables, according to WCVB.

Framingham firefighters say the helmet is irreplaceable.

"It's everything to us, it's a symbol of what we are. A piece of it is missing from Mike now," one firefighter said.
