Minn. fire station gets new generator

Because the city uses wells, the generator will allow firefighters to pump water into firetrucks when there is an outage

MIESVILLE, Minn. — Two years ago, the Miesville fire station lost power during a bad storm. Firefighters were unable to open the station doors or get equipment going in a timely manner.

"It was a disaster," Fire Chief Tim Niebur said.

After that night, the need for a generator at the station was more apparent than ever, Niebur said. But limited by a tight budget, the small town has been unable to purchase one.

On Tuesday, the department accepted a $20,900 donation from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. to cover the cost of a generator. Because the city uses wells, the generator will allow firefighters to pump water into firetrucks when there is an outage, Niebur said.

"Most cities have backup generators, but we're a little smaller," Niebur said. "So we're grateful."
