Getac’s Mobileforce™ Rugged Notebook Shows Multiple “Sides” With New Removable, Swappable 1.8” HDD Feature

Getac Inc., leading pioneer in the rugged mobile computing industry, today announced that their W130 series of notebook computers, which can survive 4’ drops on concrete, will be the first rugged laptop manufacturer to offer Toshiba’s 1.8” Hard Disk Drive (HDD) for a lighter, less power hungry rugged system. These 20, 40, and 60 GB HDD’s are removable and interchangeable and are more rugged and reliable than 2.5” drive counterparts with similar storage capacity. The W130 is part of Getac’s line of MobileForce™ computers, a line of portable notebooks built to handle rough, rugged environments and extreme climatic conditions, yet offers many of the features of retail notebooks.

The new 1.8” HDD with up to 60 GB’s of storage capacity is well suited for virtually all mobile applications such as utility, construction and field service industries, transportation and fleet management mobility and the rough and rugged needs of oil and gas exploration and military applications. The new drive provides the W130 with not only a lighter drive but one that consumes less power resulting in the desired extension of battery life most users desire of laptops. In addition, the HDD offers improved environmental specifications with 25% more shock resistance and surviving severe operating vibration conditions over 1G (gravity) continuously than a 2.5” HDD that is used by the rest of the industry.

As easy as plug–n–play, the new slim 1.8” HDD (w/canister) allows multiple users the unique ability of sharing laptops without worry of sharing data or exposure to risks inherent from traveling, mobile conditions or downtime from maintenance or repair. Users can simply insert or remove drives on a shared rugged W130, or, for critical security measures, users can simply remove the HDD for safekeeping. The removable HDD is also a great solution for security conscious users who prefers to remove and store or take their valuable data with them.

The MobileForce™ W130 features a newer 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium Mobile processor and provides up to two levels of wireless communication whether by satellite or the local network built into the system with an integrated 802.11b/g WLAN, and optional GSM/GPRS and DataTAC (Internet access via cellular network) connectivity. The notebook easily converts into a full-featured three-spindle notebook with floppy, additional hard drives and a choice of a combo CD-RW/DVD, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or a DVD-RW drive when using the optional docking station.

The 12.1" XGA LCD screen has options for a touch screen but comes standard with an anti–reflective display for excellent readability indoors or outdoors with crisp, clear pictures even in direct sunlight. The high performance video subsystem supports up to 64 MB of video memory options. Available options for supporting night activity and mobile installations include backlight keyboard and vehicle docking station.

The entire system is built to last and survive dirt, dust and water and a variety of chemicals and survive drops from waist high. The lightweight, shock resistant, ultra-durable magnesium alloy case fully sealed for water resistance and features shock-mounting for major components and the keyboard, display panel, touchpad and connectors are protected against impact, vibration, moisture and dust/dirt. It weighs only 5.9 lbs. and is certified by the US Department of Defense (DoD) having met the MIL-STD-461E and 810F standards. The HDD drive bay and all exposed I/O ports are protected by rubber plugs and include a serial and VGA port, two USB ports, a docking port, RJ-11 and RJ-45 ports, microphone and earphone ports and a DC input.
