About Toronto Fire Services
Toronto Fire Services is part of the Emergency Services that respond to 9-1-1 calls in the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is responsible for responding to fires, rescue and assisting with medical situations within the City. It was created in 1998 from the amalgamation of the former fire departments of Scarborough, Toronto, North York, East York, City of York and Etobicoke. Fire Services in Toronto began in 1874 in the former City of Toronto, and consisted of volunteer fire companies (e.g., Independent Fire Company Engine House No. 2 and Hook and Ladder Firefighting Company). After the Great Toronto Fire in 1904, which destroyed much of Bay Street from Eplande West to Melinda Street, the Fire Department in Toronto became a critical city service and has evolved into the professional service that exists today. The current Fire Chief is William Stewart, under who serve four Deputy Chiefs, and four Division Commanders – The central headquarters for Toronto Fire being based at 4330 Dufferin Street. Toronto Fire annually respond to about 140, 000 emergency incidents, representing approximately 300, 000 vehicle runs, and is the fifth largest Fire Department in North America.
