CARLSBAD, Texas — Two men were arrested Wednesday on allegations that they stole gas tanks from Carlsbad Volunteer Fire Department trucks, Tom Green County Sheriff officials reported.
Jim Chadwick III, 19, and Joseph Doty, 17, were booked into the Tom Green County Jail on burglary charges and were being held in lieu of $30,000 bonds, according to jail records.
Sheriff spokeswoman Lt. Christina Lopez said a patrol deputy in Carlsbad on Monday stopped a vehicle in which he saw a number of gas cans, a siphoning hose, bolt cutters and a cut combination lock. Chadwick and Doty were in the vehicle at the time.
On Tuesday, Carlsbad volunteer firefighters reported that fuel tanks, holding between 5 and 10 gallons, had been stolen off at least one of their brush trucks. Lopez said several of the items taken were unique to the department because firefighters had made them and were able to identify them.
Burglary of a building is a state-jail felony punishable by 180 days to two years in state jail and a fine up to $10,000.
