MagneGrip Health Bulletin Presents a Report on a Firefighter Cancer Study

CINCINNATI, OH - A study by environmental health researchers says firefighters are significantly more likely to develop several types of cancer than other workers. The report (Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Nov. 2006) found that firefighters are twice as likely to develop testicular cancer, have significantly higher rates of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and prostate cancer, and are at greater risk for multiple myeloma.

The study finds a direct correlation between firefighters' increased risk for cancer and their exposure to diesel engine exhaust and fire scene carcinogens: chemical compounds that are inhaled or absorbed through the skin. The only safe protection in firehouses, where diesel exhaust exposure is highest, is"100% effective capture."
