LOWELL, Mass. — As a Halloween costume, Robert Levesque's fire captain outfit was top-notch.
But Levesque ended up in handcuffs Saturday when he took it too far and led police on a chase driving a stolen Lowell Fire Department Crown Victoria.
When the 39-year-old unemployed Lowell man was arrested, he was dressed in black pants, a white shirt, black tie with a Fire Department tie tack and a baseball cap with a Boston Fire Department logo.
In Lowell District Court yesterday, Levesque, of 33 Fourth Ave., second floor, was released on personal recognizance after pleading innocent to negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, possession of a class E substance, failure to stop and speeding.
According to court documents, police were dispatched at 9:35 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a vehicle stolen from the Mammoth Road fire station. An officer spotted the car as it exited Fourth Avenue onto University Avenue outbound at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle failed to stop at University and Fourth avenues, and the driver momentarily lost control, according to court documents. The vehicle sped off, turned onto Sixth Avenue and stopped in front of 199 Sixth Ave.
While the keys to car were in the ignition, police said the Mammoth Road fire station had been broken into recently and keys were stolen.
In the stolen vehicle, police found a white plastic bag with two prescription bottles, one of which was for hydrocondone prescribed to Joseph Mitchum.
