2 firefighters injured in Calif. condo fire

LONG BEACH, Calif. — One firefighter had possible heat exhaustion and another one suffered a knee injury during an early evening blaze Wednesday at a downtown condominium, officials said.

The firefighters were taken to a local hospital for treatment, said Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Rich Brandt. No other injuries were reported.

The blaze started about 5:50 p.m. in a three-story garden-style condominium complex in the 600 block of Daisy Avenue and was extinguished about 20 minutes later, Brandt said. The fire produced thick black smoke that was visible from miles away.

Two sisters were home in the unit where the fire started. After smelling the smoke, they grabbed their dog and fled, he said.

The fire caused minimal damage to a neighbor's balcony above and some water damage to a unit below.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
