SOUTHWEST MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A two-alarm fire Sunday night sent two Memphis firefighters to a hospital for treatment of burned hands, and smoke inhalation and caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to Halls Feed Store.

Animals including goats, chickens and rabbits were rescued after the blaze was reported about 9:30 p.m. at 124 E. Peebles, said Lt. Wayne Cooke, a Memphis Fire Department spokesman.

More than a hundred first responders and 44 Fire Department vehicles battled the fire in the commercial building, which sustained an estimated $200,000 in damage to the structure and $100,000 to the contents, fire officials said.

Firefighters arrived at 9:36 p.m., brought the blaze under control at 11:26 p.m. and knocked it down by 12:01 a.m., officials reported.

The feed store building did not have automatic fire sprinklers and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
