BOSTON — A four-alarm blaze in Dorchester sent five Boston firefighters to the hospital and caused $500,000 in damage to a three-story duplex yesterday afternoon.

The call came in at 3:03 p.m. from 7-9 Boyd St., and as crews arrived they quickly raised a second alarm due to heavy fire from the rear porches of the six-unit, four-family building, said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.

The alarm was raised to four due to the volume of fire, proximity to other houses and the hot weather, which took a toll on 125 firefighters that responded, MacDonald said. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The injuries to firefighters were reportedly minor.

"Out of the four apartments, we have a total of nine residents that have been displaced," said MacDonald, "We've called the Red Cross to assist them."
