Autopsy: Heat, carbon monoxide causes of N.C. line of duty deaths

SALISBURY, N.C. — Salisbury firefighters Victor Isler and Justin Monroe died from heat exposure and carbon monoxide poisoning, according to prelimary autospy information released today by the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's office.

Full autopsy reports will likely be available in three to four months.

Monroe, 19, and Isler, 40, died Friday from battling a fire at Salisbury Millworks. The fire, which began early Friday morning, was thought to be contained at one end of a building before it spread, trapping the firefighters.

Monroe was a part-time firefighter in Salisbury and Spencer, as well as a volunteer at the Miller's Ferry Fire Department. Isler was a former EMT from New York whose first fire fighting job was in Salisbury.
