Firefighter injured in suspicious Mass. vacant house fire

FITCHBURG, Mass. — An overnight fire in a vacant 100-year-old house at 260 Lincoln St. has been labeled suspicious, according to Deputy Chief Robert J. Haley. Fire officials were combing through the rubble today for clues about the origin of the blaze.

"The house is a total loss," said Deputy Chief Paul J. Vaillancourt.

There was heavy fire showing on the first floor of the two-story home when firefighters arrived. The fire was reported at 2:11 a.m., and firefighters had it out in about 35 minutes.

The house, in the neighborhood between Fitchburg State College and Coolidge Park, was valued at $125,000 and is in foreclosure, according to Deputy Chief Vaillancourt.

Firefighter Scott MacArthur suffered heat exhaustion and dehydration, and was taken by ambulance to HealthAlliance Hospital — Leominster Campus, according to fire officials.
