Miss. fire truck accident puts 10 in hospital

JACKSON, Miss. — A collision involving a fire truck, ambulance, taxi, and one other vehicle put 10 people in the hospital Saturday night.

Three firefighters, three American Medical Response employees, and four civilians were sent to local hospitals after the accident, according to the Clarion Ledger.

One person had to be extracted from a vehicle and another person reportedly refused medical help.

The firefighters in the incident were a captain, a lieutenant, and a relief driver.

The fire truck struck a passenger car, and the AMR truck was turned on its side, but it's unclear how the accident occurred.

Authorities, including an accident reconstructionist, are investigating the cause, said Jackson Police Department spokeswoman Colendula Green.

"It's just good that everyone came out without life-threatening injuries," Green said.

JFD's Assistant Fire Chief R.D. Simpson said the firefighters were all out of the hospital by Sunday afternoon, but he isn't sure when they will come back to work.

"Law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics put themselves at risk every day," AMR spokesman Jim Pollard said. "Every single response could be (our) last, but we all do it for love of our fellow man and commitment to our community."
