Firefighter Dawn Brown was home alone with the mastiff when the attack occurred

BIG ROCK, Ill. — An Ill. firefighter was killed by her dog, police say.

Big Rock Fire Protection District Volunteer Firefighter Dawn Brown, 44, was found dead by her husband on Monday afternoon, according to the Chicago Tribune.

An autopsy completed on Tuesday found that Firefighter Brown died from injuries caused by one of her dogs, a mastiff.

Police are investigating what prompted the dog's attack and whether or not it had previous violent behvaior. Firefighter Brown was home alone with the mastiff and her two other dogs when the incident occurred.

The three dogs have been placed under the custody of animal control.
