1 firefighter hurt in propane tank explosion

1,000-gallon propane tank explosion set off a massive fire in a shopping mall

NBC - 10 WSLS

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. — Amherst County investigators say a 1,000 gallon propane tank exploded, causing a massive fire in the Ambriar Shopping Center, near Amherst High School earlier this evening.

One firefighter was hurt, but not seriously.

Amherst County Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Ratcliff tells WSLS that Amherst High School will open on regular schedule Tuesday.

The blast knocked out electricity to Sweet Briar College, according to messages posted on the school's Facebook and Twitter accounts. The college says Appalachian Power estimates power will be back on by morning.

The college is making electricity and wi-fi internet access available at Prothro.

UVA-Amherst Dialysis center, which is in the shopping center, will call patients Tuesday, to reschedule appointments due to the fire.
