Firefighters get 'Heart-Healthy' at FRI

ATLANTA — Hundreds of firefighters received free health screenings at FRI in Atlanta as part of the NVFC's Heart-Healthy program.

They were able to check their blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels, as well as learn fitness techniques and healthy eating tips at the show, which came to a close Saturday.

Specially-trained health counselors were available to discuss the screening results with each participant and answer any questions.

Since the NVFC launched the project three years ago, more than 14,000 firefighters have received free checks at industry shows.

Maggie Wilson, director of health and safety for the NVFC, said the screenings are playing a vital part in helping firefighters improve their conditions.

"We see a lot of people at shows who, after being checked, say they went to their doctor, got on a health program and managed to lower their blood pressure or cholesterol levels."

Smith said it is vital for firefighters to get regular health checks, even if they appear to be in perfect condition.

"I remember one person at the FDCI in Indianapolis earlier this year who was very fit, he worked out every day and assumed his readings would be pretty great, but they weren't.

"Sometimes things like high cholesterol levels can be due to family history, but a lot of people don't know that."

Earlier this month, the NVFC launched the inaugural National Firefighter Health Week as part of the Heart-Healthy initiative.
