Firefighter taken to hospital after Chicago apartment fire

The Chicago Sun-Times

CHICAGO — A firefighter was injured fighting an extra-alarm blaze at an Upton apartment building early Friday on the North Side.

Eight people, including two children, were displaced.

The fire started about 12:40 a.m. at a four-story apartment building at 4505 N. Malden St. and was elevated to a still-and-box and then a two-alarm blaze, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.

The fire was contained to the fourth floor of the new construction building and was controlled at 2:02 a.m., Rosado said.

Rodriguez said the fire started on the third floor in the rear and affected six units. Six adults and two children were displaced, Rosado said.

A firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs Deputy Director Eve Rodriguez said.

The entire building had working smoke detectors, Rodriguez said.
