Multi-alarm fire destroys California condominium

Department: San Jose Fire Department - [San Jose, California]

At 4:07 PM on August 6, units of the San Jose Fire Department and the Santa Clara County Fire Department responded to a report of fire in a two story multi-unit townhouse complex in the area of 14562 South Bascom Avenue and Loretta Lane in Los Gatos, California.

While responding to the call units reported a large column of smoke, with the first arriving Engine Company encountering heavy fire extending from the first floor into the second floor and the attic.

Due to windy conditions, construction, and exposure difficulties mutual aid units were requested with the City of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, and Saratoga Fire District contributing crews and overhead.

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading into adjacent units by completing a trench cut on the roof that effectively isolated the fire to the original fire unit.

One firefighter received minor burns and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
