L.A. Marathon ill and injured cared for by firefighters

On Sunday, March 2, from 4:43 AM to 6:18 PM, more than 200 strategically deployed Los Angeles Fire Department personnel under the direction of Assistant Chief Daniel McCarthy responded across metropolitan Los Angeles to address the needs of those attending the XXIII City of Los Angeles Marathon. The LAFD directly treated 73 persons along the diverse 26.2 mile course, transporting 23 to area hospitals. Aided by CERT and LAFD ACS volunteers as well as Fire Department Explorers, Los Angeles Firefighters concurrently supported the medical needs of an additional 100 or more race participants who sought transitional care at the completion of their respective bicycle, wheelchair and running races. There was no loss of life to race participants or life-threatening medical conditions witnessed by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel.
